SAINTS midfielder Flynn Downes is set to miss Tuesday's game against Bristol City, manager Russell Martin has confirmed.

The West Ham loanee was forced off in the first half of Southampton's thrilling 5-3 win over Huddersfield on Saturday.

After the game, Martin feared that Downes' injury could be serious, but his latest update revealed that it is not as bad as first feared.

Scotland international Adams was another who picked up a knock on the weekend and he will be assessed on Tuesday to see if he is fit for their 8:00 PM kick-off at Ashton Gate.

Asked on Monday for an update on Downes' injury, Martin said: “He will miss tomorrow’s game, but he won’t be out for very long.

"That is as positive as it could be really, especially with what he felt on the pitch. Tomorrow will be a big stretch, but he isn’t going to be out for very long at all.

“It is good news for us, the same with Che as well. We will assess Che ahead of tomorrow. If he isn’t available then he should be by Friday. It is fairly positive news for us really.”

Joe Aribo is also set to return to Southampton following the culmination of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Aribo's Nigeria fell to a 2-1 defeat to tournament hosts Ivory Coast in the final on Sunday evening.

"Hopefully he will fly back tomorrow," Martin added. "It was a disappointment for him.

“Hopefully he feels that he had a brilliant experience. I know that they will be disappointed to lose the final.

“We watched it together last night. We are looking forward to speaking to him and catching up about it.

“I hope he uses what ever he feels when he comes back. We are looking forward to getting him back.

“He will be in the squad on Friday, all being well. He will help us a lot because he was one of our top performers before he went away.”
