SAINTS defender James Bree was red-carded in the 85th minute of the 3-2 defeat at Ipswich Town on Monday.

The 26 year old was given his marching orders for pulling down goalscorer Leif Davis on the edge of the Saints box.

Referee Michael Salisbury judged the action to be last man and therefore Bree will serve a suspension.

How many matches will Bree be suspended for?

Bree, signed from Luton Town in January 2023, will be suspended for one match for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

It means he will miss the trip to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, but can return for the visit from Coventry City next Tuesday.

Does a straight red card not result in a longer ban?

Denying a goalscoring opportunity with a legitimate challenge typically only yields a one-match suspension.

Being sent off for serious foul play - such as a reckless or dangerous challenge - and violent conduct warrant a three-match suspension.

Using offensive or abusive language or gestures can lead to missing two games while spitting results in a six-match ban.

Will Saints appeal the decision?

Manager Russell Martin admitted he had not seen back the challenge but did feel Taylor Harwood-Bellis could have got there.

However, it looks like a decision that is unlikely to be overturned by an EFL panel.

Given the risk of provoking an additional one-match suspension for a failed appeal, it seems unlikely Saints will refer it back to the EFL.
