EASTLEIGH boss Kelvin Davis insists he "wants to finish the season strong" after National League survival was confirmed with a 1-0 win at Kidderminster Harriers.

Paul McCallum, who captained the side in the absence of Jake Taylor and Lee Hodson, scored the winner in the 32nd minute with a header from Saints loanee Jake Vokins' cross.

The Spitfires were able to hold on to the victory with the help of goalkeeper Joe McDonnell who made a string of important saves to keep the clean sheet intact.

Davis has now overseen back-to-back wins for only the second time since being appointed in February.

Speaking to club media after the game, the former Saints goalkeeper praised his side for sticking to the gameplan throughout the encounter.

He said: "The lads put in a performance where they were really well organised and they stuck to the gameplan so well which was massive for us today.

"We spoke about (the need for clean sheets) when we first came in. We have had a couple of bumps in the road but we have learnt from it.

"Joe (McDonnell) played very well. He made some very good saves for us. We know that when you are coming away from home, everyone has got to be at it.

"You need good performances and Joe was there for us today in important moments in the game."

When Davis took charge of the team for the first time on February 20, Eastleigh were on an 11-match winless run.

The 47 year old believes the players were suffering from a "mentality issue" when he took over but they have overcome it in the right way.

He continued: "Credit to the team because they have listened, they have put into practice the ideas that we have spoken about.

"Ultimately it’s a mentality issue that we felt like we needed to address. At the time, there were lapses in concentration.

"It’s about finishing the season in a position where we think is right. We came here today with that mentality and now we move onto the last two games in a positive position."

Eastleigh have two games remaining this season against Wealdstone on Tuesday, before they host Halifax Town on Saturday, April 20.

Davis wants to see the Spitfires "express" themselves in the final fixtures and perhaps keep possession better.

He added: "Since we’ve come in, the team have played for pride. I would like us to enjoy the football a bit more and have a bit more possession.

"It was difficult today. In an ideal world, I’d like the lads to express themselves a bit more with the ball. We want to finish the season strong."
