Southampton came away with the win after a tough match against Leeds at Wembley on Sunday - and Saints fans watching at St Mary's were ‘ecstatic.’

The Echo caught up with fans watching the event live on a big screen from the Southampton F.C. stadium after Russell Martin’s team came away with a 1-0 win against Leeds United at Wembley.

There were feelings of jubilation that Saints are re-taking their spot in the Premier League next season, following a one-year spell in the Championship.

"I hope that a decent amount of money will be invested in the team. That will make us a proper premiership team."

Other fans credited manager Russell Martin for being the driving force that got Southampton the win.

Max Willis watched the match on the big screen at St Mary's. He said: "We have had an absolutely unbelievable season.

"Russell Martin is an inspiration to this club. There have been many moments where we doubted Martin - but he’s done it and here we are."

Leon Willard and Pete Watson were also among the fans.

Leon said: "It was a scary first 10 minutes. We did look strong today, but I’m so glad we came out on top."

We will be back to losing most games in the Premier League, I suppose, but a good result today."

Saints fan David Poll did not mince his words when it came to the Saints manager - but was glad to see his method paid off.

He said: "Credit to Russell Martin - I don’t find his style particularly interesting, but it has absolutely done the job. Flynn Downes is absolutely brilliant.

“He’s a menace on the pitch."
