SAINTS manager Russell Martin hinted at his tactical set-up against Lazio was deployed with a view to next weekend's Premier League opener.
The St Mary's side hosted the Italian giants on Wednesday evening and played out an entertaining 1-1 draw after Ben Brereton Diaz's opener.
Martin lined up his team in a five-at-the-back formation before stand-in central defender Ryan Manning made way for Sam Edozie at half-time.
Saints have just seven days and one more pre-season fixture - this afternoon against Getafe - before their league season starts at Newcastle United.
Martin told the Daily Echo: "I'm really pleased with where the guys are at physically and mentally. The guys are together, you could see that during the incident.
“There's lots to work on tactically and every game will be different. Analysing Newcastle, there is going to be some stuff that is really important to us.
“We played a couple of shapes tonight with that in mind and then it will change for (Nottingham) Forest. The team will look different on Saturday, I’m looking for a step up again.
“But yeah, I'm happy and I'm looking forward to getting into a routine of the league now," Martin added, looking ahead.
“Pre-season's been demanding on everyone and I'm really looking forward to next week. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
Saints versus Getafe at St Mary's kicks off at 2pm. Martin is likely to line up a strong starting XI and it could offer insight into his thoughts ahead of the league season.
