THE Premier League have unveiled a plan to improve VAR communication via a new social media account ahead of the start of the 2024/25 season.

For the first time, @PLMatchCentre on X will share near-live explainers and updates on operational and officiating matters for every Premier League match.

The Premier League state that the account will share factual explanations of on-pitch refereeing decisions and the involvement of the video assistant referee.

In the absence of live VAR audio being broadcast, as it is not permitted in football, the Premier League Match Centre aim to relay near-live information on social media.

Where necessary, additional information on laws of the game and VAR process from PGMOL experts will be communicated.

A statement said: "Premier League Match Centre – based at Stockley Park – is the operational hub of the league. It helps with the smooth running of matchday operations of the competition and is linked into all 20 Premier League stadiums, the VAR Hub and broadcast partners around the world."

Southampton's return to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs means a return to VAR, with it not used during the regular EFL seasons.
