FORMER players Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott have backed Saints to avoid an immediate return to the Championship this season.

The ex-internationals now work as pundits and believe Saints have enough to remain in the Premier League at the end of his season.

Russell Martin's side won promotion via the play-offs last season after they beat Leeds United 1-0 at Wembley.

Speaking on the stick to football podcast, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher backed Leicester to stay up and suggested that the Foxes "will think they are a Premier League club."

In response, Keane added: "I think Southampton will think that. They were up a few (years ago)."

Scott, who played 161 times for England was in agreement, adding: "I think Southampton (will stay up). I like how they play actually."

Wright rounded out a trio of ex-pros who think Martin's charges have enough to stay up this season.

The Arsenal legend said: "I watched a lovely lady on the fan debate who was so enthusiastic about Ipswich, but I just feel that Southampton will be the ones (who stay up)."

Saints get their Premier League campaign under way with a trip to Newcastle United on Saturday, August 17.

Although they head to St James' Park as the underdogs, given Newcastle's recent league positions, Keane has backed them to pull off an upset.

"I think Southampton surprised everyone. Southampton (will win) 2-1)," he concluded.
