Southampton 0-4 Brighton: Daily Echo player ratings

Five-time England international Ramsdale prevented the Seagulls from becoming the latest team to net five at St Mary's this season.

Joao Pedro gave them a first half lead before Georginio Rutter, Kaoru Mitoma and Jack Hinshelwood added more in the second half.

Ramsdale and the Southampton supporters were let down by a chaotic outfield performance which handed Brighton so much space.

Here's how we rated every Saints performance...

Starters 

Aaron Ramsdale - 8.

Southampton would have conceded eight had it not been for their goalkeeper. Put Yankuba Minteh off by rushing from his line and recovered well to save a certain goal from the Gambian forward. Some other good stops too. Eight in total.

Part of a Southampton defence which got pulled all over the pitch. A rare bright moment when he got into the box but that should not stand out as a highlight in the attacking third.

James Bree - 3.

Lost his man, Mitoma, for the third goal - scored by the Japanese international. Really struggled to handle the fluid Brighton attack. What he is being asked to do is asking a lot of the former Luton Town man and he does not always have the answers. 

Jan Bednarek - N/A.

Forced off with an injury 11 minutes into the game. Did not play for long enough to judge his performance. Could be a big miss.

Joe Aribo - 3.

Inadvertently handed possession to Brighton for their second goal and was pulled all over the place due to the zonal marking. Struggled to play 90 minutes at centre-back, but is filling in during an injury crisis.

Replaced at half-time because Juric felt he was not making decisions quickly enough for the Premier League. Hooked for the second straight game. Produced the only dangerous cross, continued to get stuck in and probably didn't deserve to come off. 

Lesley Ugochuwku - 5.

Booked early on for a late tackle but was still Southampton's best defensive player. Completed the most tackles (two of three) but was replaced right after Mitoma's goal. Partnering a more attacking player again in midfield. 

Mateus Fernandes - 5.

Dropped into a deeper role to allow Tyler Dibling to play ahead of him. Full of energy as ever and had two shots on goal - more than any other Saints player. Not too many other standout moments but nothing to be criticised for.

Returned to the starting lineup but struggled to impose himself through the middle, and offered little to the game by way of energy. Has not reached the same levels since his injury but is a young man finding consistency.

Cameron Archer - 4.

Handed his second league start under Juric but cut an isolated figure for the majority of his 72 minutes. Had just 14 touches. Thought he had equalised before the flag went up, was a close run and decent finish but not working for him. 

Kamaldeen Sulemana - 4.

Dropped very deep at times to follow his man but still left space for Hinshelwood to cross for Mitoma. Lost 15 of his 20 duels but did have flashes in the final third, albeit one of his quietest games under new boss Juric.

Armel Bella-Kotchap - 4.

Some good things and some bad things. Returned to a raucous reception but quickly made an error, handing Joao Pedro a chance. Also failed to deal with the Brazilian for the third goal. Attempted 10 long balls and a couple of those were pretty good. 

Yukinari Sugawara - 4.

Came on at the break for a second straight game and showed some signs going forward but lacked a lot of quality at the back. Not particularly imposing on the game. 

Will Smallbone - 4.

Guilty of ball-watching for Brighton's final goal, allowing the ball to drop to Hinshelwood from a corner. One of his first touches was a loose pass in midfield leading to a chance. Just 10 touches in midfield from 20 minutes. Not a particularly positive impact.

A different option but the same results up front, offering very little. Hacked at one half chance and failed to connect. Only five touches giving Southampton's strikers a combined 19 touches over the full match. 

Albert Gronbaek - N/A.

Came on with two regular minutes remaining. Unfair to judge him based on such a small amount of time. Has played less than 10 minutes since starting at Ipswich.
