NEW signing Tom Fellows is excited to test himself in a new environment after leaving boyhood club West Brom to join Saints.

Fellows, 22, joined Southampton from the Baggies for an initial £8million on Friday, marking the end of his 12 years at the club.

The Under-21 European Championship winner explained how the project at Saints enticed him to leave West Brom this summer.

And after a conversation with manager Will Still, Fellows understands that he can play a key role in a new system at Saints.

“If I was ever going to leave West Brom, it needed to be a really big opportunity for me," he said in his first Saints interview.

"After speaking to Southampton, the manager, the staff, it was clear to me that the club have big ambitions.

“They want to get to the Premier League - that’s a pretty clear goal. I’m really looking forward to being here.

“I am really looking forward to a new challenge, a new club. I’ve got to test myself again. I’m looking forward to getting going.

He added: "The manager has a clear way of playing and I think it suits my game. It was clear to me he wants to play with wingers and width - that’s important for me because I like being wide.

“Hopefully I can keep progressing, keep getting assists and add more goals to my game, which is an area of improvement for me.

“I think the coach here can help with that. It’s exciting because he’s a young manager, he’s hungry, and that’s important. I’m looking forward to working with him.”
