ACADEMY midfielder Moses Sesay is not expecting a handout from Tonda Eckert during his spell as interim Saints boss.

Sesay, 18, insisted he is focused on what he can do as he waits to gain further experience in Southampton's first team following his debut earlier this season.

Eckert, who was appointed under-21s manager in the summer, awarded a debut to Barnaby Williams in Southampton’s recent 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

That followed his decision to name Cam Bragg on the bench against QPR, while free-scoring forward Nick Oyekunle made his debut in Will Still’s final game as Saints boss.

Sesay appeared to be the next bright prospect out of Southampton’s academy after impressive performances with the senior team in pre-season.

However, a bout of tonsillitis kept him out of action towards the end of Still’s reign, meaning his Carabao Cup cameo remains his only senior outing.

With Eckert expected to remain in charge of Saints for a few more weeks, Sesay insisted he is focused on becoming a standout for the under-21s while waiting for his next call.

“It’s been a good experience being in and around the first team and making my debut,” he told the Daily Echo.

“Hopefully, I can make a few more appearances for the first team. Growing into the role of being the best player in the under-21s is a confidence thing.

“Over time, if you play more, it’s easier to create that feeling. I’m just going to stay patient and wait for my time.

“With Tonda in charge now, I’m staying focused on what I'm doing. He’s a good coach and I’ve got a relationship with him, but I’ll continue to wait for my time to come.”
