ANDREW Surman has revealed he does not want to leave Saints, but will have to reassess his situation this summer.

The midfielder is under contract at St Mary’s until the summer of 2011, but is already rumoured to be attracting interest from the likes of Reading.

His future will be one of the main talking points, outside of a potential buyer for the club, over the coming weeks.

For now, though, Surman is trying not to think too much about where he might be playing his football next season.

“I don’t really know what the situation is, so I would rather cross that bridge when I come to it,” he said. “Obviously, I love being at Southampton and I’ve been here since I was ten-years-old.

“I don’t want to leave, but like I say I just have to assess the situation when it’s a bit clearer when the takeover comes across and go forward from there.”

Surman, 22, added: “Obviously, my current position is just being devastated at being relegated.

“I’m still a Southampton player, so until I hear differently I’m gearing up for next season.

“I’m having a good break now and just try and get it out of my head.

“But it will be a hard one for everyone to swallow.

“But I think it’s just looking forward to next season now.”

Surman said he is also unsure how many of his teammates will be back at the club next season.

“It’s hard to tell,” he said.

“No one knows what the situation is, with a takeover and stuff like that, so no one’s too sure about their futures at the moment until someone takes over, because I think there’s a lot of players out of contract.

“Until someone takes over the club I don’t think anyone’s really going to know what’s going to happen next season.”

Surman admitted this summer would be a tough one for everyone associated with Saints.

“It’s going to be a hard one to swallow for everyone associated with the club, it’s going to take a while to sink in,” he said.

“It’s definitely hit me a bit more now that the last game of the season is over.

“We’ve now got a long summer to think about what could have been.

“Everyone knows what the situation is and, obviously, everyone’s bitterly disappointed.

“I’m absolutely gutted.

“We’ve just got to get away for the summer now and come back next season looking to get promoted back into the Championship as quickly as possible.”
