Southampton teenager Max Brick, 13, who trains at the Quays Eddie Read Swimming and Diving Complex, qualified to represent Britain at both World and European Championships this summer with a stunning performance at the ASA British National Junior Elite Competition in Sheffield.

Following a costly mistake during training at the senior championships the previous week when he landed a belly flop off the 10m board, Max was forced to change his complete list of dives running up to the competition.

Demonstrating courage and determination, he still pulled off an exceptional gold medal performance with scores that qualified him for both the junior European and junior World teams.

Brick, pictured, has also taken bronze on the 3m board and has yet to compete on 1m springboard.

Back in Southampton, he will be training hard to prepare for next month's junior Europeans in Palma de Majorca and the world event in Kuala Lumpar in August.

His result justifies Brick's place on the prestigious TASS 2012 programme, a national scheme supporting athletes preparing to represent Great Britain in the London Olympics. Only 200 or so athletes across all sports have been selected for the initiative.

Coach, Charly Tomkys said: "He has been working incredibly hard and it seemed so unfair that he should go into this so soon after such a major setback, but it just demonstrated what a tough kid he is!"

l Divers from all levels of the Southampton Diving Academy will be involved in the diving display at The Quays on Saturday, June 17 (5pm and 7pm). Tickets are priced at £10/adult, £5/concession, £25 for a family of four, and can be obtained from The Quays (023 8072 0900).
