HAMPSHIRE have been forced to make a change for their revenge mission today against Devon in the Walker Cup.

Last week Hampshire lost to the West Country side in the Johns Trophy but president Molly Shutler and her team are determined to turn the tables in the double rink championship at neutral Castle Carey, Somerset.

National singles' champion Julie Saunders has had to drop out because of work commitments.

The Richmond Park player took time off from her job as a school sports' coach for the British Isles events in Scotland last month and has been further involved this week in the western area finals of the Hampshire championships.

Saunders is already booked for the two-wood singles in the Hampshire finals at Banister Park next week and she is hoping that, if the area finals are successful, she will be in the last eight of the county for the four-wood singles as well as the pairs.

With all those bowls matches to play, she has reluctantly decided to give the double rink a miss and her place in the Wendy Line rink will be taken by Margaret Holden from Alton Social with Elizabeth Messer switching from two to lead.

The other rink, skipped by Cove's Allyson Flint, is unchanged.

Rinks: Elizabeth Messer, Margaret Holden, Jenny McAusland, Wendy Line; Pam Lambshead, Sheila Hall, Sue Sharpe, Allyson Flint. Reserve: Brenda Plumpton.

Joining Saunders in the Hampshire two-woods showdown a week today are Atherley skip Line, Olive Smith (Banister Park), Milton Park duo Annie Biggs and Kath Patrick, county secretary Cynthia Abraham (Aldershot Underwood), Plumpton (Fleet United) and Ann Ankers (Richmond Park).

The week starts with the fours on Monday (quarter-finals in the morning, semi-finals in the afternoon).

Central Division will be represented by Katherine Page, Barbara Sparling, Wendy Long and Maureen Hawkins (Pirrie Park) and the Atherley rink of Ella Dibble, Gill Hayes, Jean Terrell and former Winchester C&C skip Christine Doig.

Line (singles) and the twosome of Abraham and Whitchurch skip Rosemary Corney (pairs) took the county over-55 titles at Ringwood and now go into area rounds.

After beating Lambshead (Cowplain) 21-20 in a semi-final classic, Line overcame Jean Philip (Pyestock) 21-6 while Abraham and Corney beat Sandy Moyse and Pat Rye from Lee-on-the-Solent in the pairs' final.

l The Hampshire final of the Top Club Championship between Lee-on-the-Solent and Alton Social is at Banister Park on Saturday.
