SOUTH coast sailing star Lucy Macgregor caused a major upset at the latest round of the World Match Racing Tour by comfortably beating current world champion Mathieu Richard.
Macgregor and her crew, which includes her Solent University student sister Kate, put Richard to the sword in their opening race at the Argo Group Gold Cup in Bermuda.
Macgregor’s team, who were recently crowned Women’s Match Racing World Champions, were later beaten by young Kiwi sailor Phil Robertson.
Macgregor, from Poole, said: “Our match against Mathieu was a good one but we made silly mistakes in the second one, handing victory to Phil Robertson. We’re learning all the time – the boats here need a different skill set to the ones we normally sail which makes it tough out there.”
Hampshire’s Ben Ainslie and Ian Williams both got off to a good start, winning their opening matches.
Success at the event is crucial – only the top six boats will be invited to race at the Monsoon Cup in Malaysia, the final event on the World Match Race Tour.
