Saints’ five match unbeaten run came to an end as they were defeated 2-0 at fellow promotion hopefuls Huddersfield.

Both goals came in a first half where Saints looked slightly off the pace and were put under constant pressure, as they tried to pass the ball out from the back.

They improved as they mixed up the play in a stop-start second period, but by then the damage had been done and they couldn’t pull it back in a match which had a remarkable 11 minutes of stoppage time.

Saints v Huddersfield - as it happened

Kelvin Davis was forced into action with the first shot of the game on six minutes.

Joey Gudjonsson lashed a free kick just outside the area on the left hand side that Davis just about beat away diving to his left.

But he was left helpless just a minute later as Huddersfield took the lead.

Again it came from a sweet Gudjonsson strike, as he drilled in a fierce effort from outside the box that beat Davis but smashed against the inside of the post.

However, the rebound cannoned out to Anthony Pilkington who unleashed a brilliant shot of his own to put it back across goal and into the top corner, leaving Davis with no chance and Huddersfield led 1-0.

Saints were not knocked out of their stride though and, after Antony Kay became the first man in the book, and Jose Fonte gave Ian Bennett a test on 11 minutes which the Huddersfield keeper was up to, diving to his left to turn wide the low shot.

Up the other end an error allowed Alan Lee the chance to try and lob Davis from 30 yards out but he lifted his effort over the bar.

Saints were really trying to pass out from the back but under intense pressure there were a few mistakes and hairy moments creeping in.

Davis was in business again on 21 minutes but this time able to make a fairly routine save from a half volley from Graham Carey that was straight at the Saints keeper.

Adam Lallana and Jason Puncheon swapped wings a couple of times during the half to see if they could trouble Huddersfield but it was still the Terriers who were on top, Carey firing in another long range effort but this time off target.

Davis had to be strong to make another good save as a corner broke to Kay, who took a touch before firing goalwards from eight yards out.

Saints were fuming moments later as they thought the assistant had flagged to signal Lallana had been tripped when clean through on goal, but he apparently had not.

They almost scored without any debate on 36 minutes as Lallana got to the left by-line and crossed for Lambert whose header beat Bennett but not Damien Johnson, who was back on the line before Puncheon side footed the follow-up over the bar.

Pilkington was the second man to be booked for pushing over Davis after he had collected the ball, before Dean Hammond followed him for a body check on Gudjonsson.

Saints were given a let off two minutes before the break when a right wing free kick went all the way through to Peter Clarke at the far post, but his volley was poor and into the side netting.

Dan Seaborne was shown a yellow card for a rash challenge a minute later.

But Saints paid the price as Carey’s right wing free kick was cleared only to Gudjonsson on the edge of the area and he drilled a low right footed volley past Davis and into the bottom corner for 2-0.

When the half time whistle went Saints knew they had a lot of work to do to get back into the game.

Saints started off the second half immediately charging at Huddersfield with Lambert feeding Puncheon who in turn squared to Guly do Prado but his shot was blocked by a brave challenge from Lee Peltier.

Huddersfield were forced into a change on 52 minutes when Peltier limped off as a result of his excellent challenge to be replaced by Scott Arfield.

Saints were at least mixing their play a little in the second half, not always trying to pass from the back no matter what the circumstance.

The trouble was that with a two goal cushion Huddersfield didn’t need to stretch themselves in pursuit of another goal.

Lambert, who moments earlier had a half hearted penalty appeal waved away, had a chance to half the lead when Puncheon stood up a near post cross to him but his header was straight at Bennett.

He took a whack on the head for his efforts and had to have it bandaged so he could continue.

Huddersfield made a second change on 59 minutes with Pilkington replaced by Joe Garner.

Gudjonsson was booked after leaving his foot in on Hammond before Danny Butterfield joined him after tripping Gudjonsson.

Adkins made his first switch on 67 minutes with Lee Barnard coming on for Guly.

That was followed four minutes later with Nicholas Bignall coming on for his Saints debut with a groggy looking Lambert going off.

There was a further delay when the linesman had to retire hurt with the fourth official taking over flag duties.

However, they appeared to have to try and find a new fourth official, a hunt which took some six minutes.

Adkins used the break to give his players a mini team talk pitch side with the players desperately trying to stay warm.

Before play restarted Morgan Schneiderlin came on for Puncheon.

That was followed with Jordan Rhodes coming on for Lee.

Saints were pushing up and starting to squeeze a bit of pressure on Huddersfield – and when the reserve fourth official held the board up they knew they had at least 11 minutes of stoppage time to get two goals back.

However, the nearest they came was Richard Chaplow’s header onto the roof of the net with the only other real moment of note a flashpoint that saw Fonte booked.

When the final whistle finally blew Saints’ defeat was confirmed and the unbeaten run blown apart.
