Rickie Lambert has had to have several stitches in a head wound following the 2-0 defeat at Huddersfield.
Saints’ star striker accidentally clashed heads with Peter Clarke in the second half of the game at the Galpharm and was bandaged up before trying to carry on.
However, he was unable to remember where he was and had to be taken off.
Saints manager Nigel Adkins was understandably concerned.
He said: “He’s got a nasty head wound with several stitches in there.
“He has got no recollection of the game whatsoever and that’s why he came off.
“There is obviously concern and he will be checked over by the medical people.
“We have excellent medical staff at our football club.
“We hope he’ll be in contention for selection next weekend but we’ll have to wait and see.”
