HAMPSHIRE chairman Rod Bransgrove is hoping Danny Briggs is not rushed into the full England squad.

Briggs has been the England Performance Programme’s best spinner in his six weeks in Australia.

After claiming match figures of 7-106 as the EPP won the final tour game against Western Australia, the 19-year-old is rivalling Graeme Swann’s understudies, James Tredwell and Monty Panesar, in England’s pecking order.

But Bransgrove does not want the Isle of Wight slowleft armer to be fast tracked in case he ends up like Panesar (below), whose career had stalled before his Ashes recall.

“Briggsy has been excellent but the only risk now is trying to rush him,” said Bransgrove. “If we do, we could end up with another Panesar.

“Briggsy has masses of potential but needs a year or two continuing to grow and develop at his own pace.”

Briggs (right) has outbowled Kent off-spinner Tredwell for the EPP by taking 4-9 in a one-day win against Western Australia before finishing with 4-60 and 3-46 in a seven-wicket, three-day win against the same opponents yesterday.

He took the last two wickets to fall as WA were bowled out for 199 in their second innings, having begun the final day on 175-8.

Craig Kieswetter clubbed five sixes in a superb century as the EPP chased down a target of 248 to complete an impressive seven-wicket win.

Kieswetter dominating an opening stand of 104 with Yorkshire’s Adam Lyth before eventually falling for 113, while captain James Hildreth added a classy 63.

The squad will remain in Perth for another week of training and skills development, with the bowlers also working in support of the Test team ahead of the third Ashes Test at the WACA.

Briggs is expected to be included in the England Lions squad for their trip to the Caribbean in January.

Jimmy Adams, who is currently playing for the Auckland Aces in New Zealand, is also likely to be involved and Bransgrove hopes it will not stop both playing for the Hampshire Royals in the Caribbean t20.

Meanwhile, Bransgrove (left) is not taking seriously speculation that Shane Warne, who attended the Hampshire chairman’s 60th birthday party two months ago, will make a comeback during this Ashes series.

“It smacks of desperation and how much they’re struggling,” he said. “I’m not saying he couldn’t do it but it’s very unlikely it’s on the agenda.

“I still think they’ll fight like tigers but it’s difficult to see them getting a win against us.”
