England have called Hampshire's Michael Lumb into their squad for the Twenty20 series against Australia after Craig Kieswetter was ruled out to have minor surgery on an abscess.

Lumb, currently playing for Queensland Bulls, will join the squad for the match against a Prime Minister's XI on Monday.

National Selector Geoff Miller said: "It is unfortunate that Craig has been ruled out of the Twenty20 series but having performed well during his time with the England Performance Programme this winter he will have an opportunity to make a full recovery and then continue to push for further international honours when he tours with England Lions later this month.

"Michael Lumb has already demonstrated his ability in Twenty20 cricket and it is good to have him back playing cricket again after a long-term injury. We are delighted to be able to call a player of his calibre into the squad."

Lumb will remain with the squad for the two-match series, in Adelaide and Melbourne on Wednesday and Friday of next week, before returning to the Bulls for the remainder of the Australian domestic competition. Kieswetter is expected to recover in time for England Lions' tour of the West Indies next month.

The pair opened together with great success as England won last year's ICC World Twenty20, with Kieswetter hitting 63 as Australia were beaten in the final.

Lumb finished the tournament with a strike rate of over 140 but has been ruled out since August with a broken foot after he was struck by a shot from Kieswetter in Hampshire's LV= County Championship clash with Somerset.
