FORMER Saints striker Kenwyne Jones is pleased Stoke will go into their “momentous” FA Cup final as underdogs.

The Trinidad & Tobago star is set to lead the line for the Potters against favourites Manchester City at Wembley tomorrow.

And he is glad Roberto Mancini’s expensively-assembled squad will have to endure the greater weight of expectancy.

“We’ve been underdogs all season,” said Jones, Stoke’s record £8m signing. “It’s just continuing the trend and that’s great.

“All we can go out and do is play our football because that’s all we’ve been doing all season, so it’s not really a massive difference.

“We’re still going to be boring Stoke that no-one expects anything of.”

The 26-year-old added: “Manchester City is a very big football club, they have a massive fanbase and massive resources, and they have world class players, so of course it is going to be a test.

“We are just looking forward to going out and doing our bit.”

Stoke booked their ticket to the final with an incredible 5-0 romp against Bolton in the semis.

Jones, who bagged the third that day, admitted it is an enormous achievement for everyone associated with Stoke.

“It’s a big occasion for everyone, the football club, the city, the fans, and their families, so it is a momentous occasion and we are definitely looking forward to it,” he said.

Jones has scored 12 goals this season, but five of those have come in his last six games – including one in last Sunday’s 3-1 win against Arsenal.

That makes him one of the most in-form strikers in the country right now – but the player himself still believes he has more to offer.

“The goals have been coming I believe, but you don’t feel that is your best form,” he said.

“I think as a player you look wider at what you are doing.

“At other times I could be in my best form but not scoring.

“I’m just happy to be on the scoresheet right now leading up to the final, and hopefully it will continue then. As a player you always have to think, from the day you start playing to the day you retire, that your best is yet to come.”

Jones joined Saints in 2004 from Trinidad & Tobago side W Connection, going on to make 80 appearances and scoring 22 goals.

He left St Mary’s in August 2007, when Sunderland paid £6m for him.

Jones, who was part of Trinidad & Tobago’s 2006 World Cup squad, has been with Stoke since his £8m move to the Britannia Stadium last summer.

He admits that the FA Cup final will be one of the biggest moments in his career.

“Being in the FA Cup final is a great achievement, but then making the World Cup is a great achievement, playing in the Premier League is a great achievement – they all rank in the same place,” he said.
