Saints’ greatest ever winger has backed Alex Chamberlain and Steve De Ridder to take the npower Championship by storm this season.

Terry Paine flew over from South Africa to watch Saints in the Memorial Cup and in their friendly against West Brom and was impressed with what he saw.

The man who made over 700 appearances for Saints knows a thing or two about wing play and has given his seal of approval to Saints’ flying pair.

He said: “It was nice to get a first-hand look at the boy down the right flank, Alex Chamberlain.

“He showed in the Memorial Cup, and also against West Brom, that he’s certainly got something there.

“He did extremely well before getting injured on Wednesday, and was the only one that provided any real penetration in the first half.

“His replacement, Steve De Ridder, caught my eye too.

“He looked like a very good professional. He showed plenty of good habits and it looks like he understands what the wing role is all about."
