Local anglers have been finding some nice bass from shore locations with Mark Williams (Waterside) landing an 8lb beauty while fishing at Calshot Activity Centre.

Williams used a whole squid presented on a 6ft sliding pennel to tempt the specimen.

Chris Bayliss (Waterside) landed bass weighing 8lb 2oz and 7lb 5oz while targeting a Dorset shore mark. Bayliss was using 3/0 hooks baited with strips of mackerel.

A superb 3lb 8oz specimen tub gurnard which shattered the NFSA Wessex area record was the highlight of the sixth round of the four-a-side interclub Neptune League held between Avon Beach and Friars Cliff.

Brian Fisk (Bournemouth & District SAA) caught the record breaker on a size 2 hook baited with ragworm and tipped off with a sliver of mackerel.

Other species recorded on the night included mackerel, scad, garfish, black bream, pout, sole and silver eels.

Wessex Angling - Pete Christopher, Wayne Pidgley, Paul Johnson and Simon Barber - won with 16lb 12oz.

Wessex top the overall leaderboard in the weight category with 45lb 15oz with three matches left.

Others: Lymington & District SFC 39lb 3.5oz, Boscombe & Southbourne A 32lb 13.5oz, Bournemouth & District A 27lb 6.5oz.

A wide variety of species put in an appearance during the Boscombe & Southbourne SFC autumn open shore competition.

Glen Short (Lymington club) won after beaching a 6lb 4oz small-eyed-ray and a small sole during the event which attracted over 50 competitors.

Other species recorded included turbot, garfish, dabs, dogfish, scad, bass and gurnard.

John Lintern came second with 5lb 1oz, including a 1lb 14oz turbot which won the pool for the heaviest flattie.

Others: Mark Whitemore 3lb 6.5oz bass, Tony O'Grady (Fareham) 2lb 9oz, Darren Perritt 1lb 13.5oz, Dave Lane 1lb 3.5oz, Julian Shambrook 1lb 3oz.

Glen Short teamed up with fellow club member Terry Smith (Hordle) to win the pairs event.
