DAVID PORTER's brilliant form in 2006 continued at Corhampton on Friday as he broke the course record to annex the Hampshire PGA Strokeplay title.

The 36-hole event had to be reduced to 18 due to heavy rain but Porter, whose sights are set on landing a place on the European Tour next season, shot a birdie-strewn 65 to claim the silverware.

The Wellow ace's round eclipsed the 66 shot by former Barton-on-Sea pro Kevin Saunders at a previous Hampshire PGA event.

Porter's confidence is sky high ahead of November's Tour School in Spain, where he will be aiming initially to be in the top 80 out of 310 entrants in the second qualifying stage (November 1-4). That would get him into the final qualifying stage at San Roque (November 9-14), where the top 30 and ties earn European Tour cards for 2007.

Just two weeks ago, the 23-year-old North Baddesley player shot rounds of 64, 67, 69 and 70 at The Oxfordshire course to top the first qualifying stage field.

And, his putter was again red hot at Corhampton to keep him believing he can make it on to the main tour for the pre-Christmas start to the season.

He said: "All the events I have played this year have been in preparation for getting my tour card.

"I played three Europro Tour events earlier this season to get 72-hole tournament sharpness and have worked hard on my wedge play and putting.

"My stroke average has come down from 70.2 in 2005 to 67.3 and last week's performance was great for my confidence.

"Although one off-day can be enough to put you out of contention at Q-School, I feel good about my game and will just take each round as it comes."

Porter was the Hampshire PGA Order of Merit winner in 2005, when he also claimed the Hampshire Matchplay title.
