The two senior men's teams of the Solent Stars Academy locked horns in a pre-season friendly at Fleming Park.

And it was the newly-reconstituted Stars team that defeated their Academy partners, Team Solent, from Southampton Solent University.

Stars featured several trialists in preparation for the new English League Division 1 season.

But it was Solent duo Kay Laval and Liam Mitchell who showed up well early on, both sinking three-pointers to help their side lead 9-6.

Stars missed the influence of injured guard Ryan Payne in the initial stages but were soon able to put some moves together to score the next ten points - half of them coming from their exciting, new American Earl Moore.

With Clayton Milner, pictured, working successfully under the basket at both ends, Stars were able to stretch their lead to a healthy nine points, 24-15, at the end of the first quarter.

Solent's coach-for-the-night, Mick Byrne, got more out of his squad in the second quarter when only two points separated the teams.

One player who looked very promising was Sebastian Zwolak, recently released by the now defunct Nottingham Knights.

Zwolak showed good form both in his positional play and occasional shooting and was able to get inside the Stars defence several times.

With Milner scoring regularly from inside and Moore able to add another ten points in the third quarter, new Stars coach Kerry Kirby gave all his players court time as they began to dominate.

John Wilkins and Ben Stanley showed up well and Kirby also took a close look at Frenchman Louis Allen.

For Team Solent, Spaniard Guermo Saez added several points before fouling out early in the final quarter.

The players tired as the game progressed, showing that both coaches need to work on fitness before the league campaigns.

Stars begin their league programme at West Herts Warriors this coming Saturday. It begins a run of five consecutive away games.

Stars: Earl Moore 37, Clayton Milner 27, Ben Stanley 14, Louis Allen 6, Rob Bawden 6, Matthew Godfrey 3, John Wilkins 3.
