EASTLEIGH’S long wait for a new targetman finally came to fruition last night when Craig McAllister returned to the Silverlake Stadium.

The imposing 31-year-old has joined Ian Baird’s Blue Square Bet South promotion hopefuls on a two-year deal after parting company with Newport County.

McAllister, who started out with Pirelli General and whose parents live in Midanbury, has had two previous spells with Eastleigh in 2001 and on loan from Stevenage Borough in 2004.

The former Basingstoke, Woking, Exeter and Crawley hitman is also well known to Eastleigh director and lifelong Oxford United season ticket holder Stewart Donald from his spell at The Kassam Stadium in 2008.

“Craig has a very good physical presence and is exceptional in the air,” said Spitfires boss Ian Baird. “Combine that with his excellent work ethic and he will add another dimension to our attacking options next season.”

Glasgow-born McAllister was just halfway through a two-year deal with Newport and spent five months of last season on loan at BSB Premier rivals Luton Town, helping them reach the play-off final at Wembley.
