Michael Lumb believes he can win the county championship with Hampshire.

Middle-order batsman Lumb, 26, completed his move from Yorkshire yesterday and reckons he can win his second championship winners' medal, and earn an England call-up, next season.

Lumb, a championship winner with Yorkshire in 2001, has agreed a three-year contract with Hampshire and has his sights set on a second title.

The South African-born left-hander, who was also the subject of interest from Nottinghamshire, said: "I've joined Hampshire for cricketing reasons. It's a forward-thinking club that ticks all the boxes for me.

"I've done well at the Rose Bowl in the past, the pitch there has definitely improved and playing under a great captain like Shane Warne should improve my game.

"They play very positively and have got a side that can win the championship.

"I know Nic Pothas from when I was a young kid at Gauteng and they've got other very good players like John Crawley, Jimmy Adams and Dimi Mascarenhas.

"It's a team good enough to win the championship. Hopefully I can help the boys win more trophies and I think I can still play for England."

Former Yorkshire captain Darren Lehmann tipped Lumb for an Ashes squad place at the start of the season.

But Lehmann's Yorkshire career ended at the end of last season, with Lumb frustrated at life at Headingley under director of cricket David Byas.

He scored 963 championship runs at 41.86 last season and has a first-class career record of 4194 runs at 34.09 for Yorkshire.

That includes a sparkling 105 from 120 balls at the Rose Bowl in July, after which Warne commended Lumb for playing him better than any other county batsman.

Manager Paul Terry said: "Michael's an important long-term signing, especially as we'll only be able to have one overseas player from next year. I've long regarded him as one of the best young talents in the country."

Lumb is expected to bat at number four or five for Hampshire.

But his arrival has lessened the likelihood of fellow left-hander Simon Katich returning next season and contributed to Chris Benham's delay in signing a new contract.

Michael Brown has been the subject of interest from Durham and Northants and is also yet to put pen to paper.

Director of cricket Tim Tremlett said: "It should all be resolved in the next ten days. We've tried to get in touch with Chris but he has an agent who is not making things easy."
