SOUTHAMPTON AC president Mary Axtell won a complete set of gold, silver and bronze medals for over-75 women at the European Masters Athletics Championships in Copenhagen.

Axtell's treasure hunt started with 100 metres bronze.

That was the former PE teacher's first international medal in a career that began in the 1950s, guided in earlier years by coaching great, the late Mike Smith.

Clearly enjoying the glint of precious metal, Axtell was on a roll.

Just a few days later she was back on track, claiming silver in the 200m before combining with her GB teammates to win sprint relay gold.

Axtell is an inspiration to everyone at the Southampton club, in particular to the younger sprinters with her dedication to training, perseverance in the face of injury and steely competitiveness - and she is in no mood to retire just yet!

She has served notice to her coaching team that she has set her sights on the European indoor Masters Championships to be held in March 2018 in Madrid.
