The Ageas Bowl is expected to be confirmed as one of the ten grounds that will host matches in the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

The England and Wales Cricket Board this week finalised the hosting agreement for the tournament with the International Cricket Council, and have now begun the process of selecting venues for the matches.

All nine of the accredited Test grounds, including the Ageas Bowl, are likely to be included, with one other spot up for grabs.

Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove said: “First of all, I just think it is fantastic news for English and Welsh cricket that we have been chosen to host the World Cup on these shores.

“I understand that all nine of the Test venues will be allocated matches, so it is pretty exciting. It’s another great thing for us to look forward to.”

ECB chief executive David Collier said: “The signing of this agreement now enables the ECB to enter into staging agreements with venues who wish to stage matches in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

“The ECB is honoured to have been selected to stage one of the largest and most important global sports events which will be a wonderful boost to sport and cricket in particular throughout England and Wales.”

Assuming the Ageas Bowl’s status as one of the venues is confirmed, it will be another feather in the cap for Hampshire’s home stadium, which has been undergoing a £48m development that is due to see it become the country’s only “model Test match ground”.

A multi-million pound hotel is currently being constructed, and is expected to be fully operational by next March. Bransgrove said that, once work is completed, the 25,000-seat venue will look “amazing”.

It hosted its first Test in 2011, as England faced Sri Lanka, while it has been the setting for a raft of one-day matches and two Twenty20 Finals Days.

England are set to play another Test at the Ageas Bowl next year, against India, while this season will see them take on New Zealand in a one-day international and Australia in an ODI and a T20 game.
