England head into two days off from the World Cup with captain Michael Vaughan warning they must improve when they return to duty if they are to progress in the tournament.

Yesterday's unconvincing four-wicket victory over Bangladesh at the Kensington Oval has set up effectively a straight knock-out showdown with South Africa next Tuesday, which should decide whether England will progress to the semi-final or exit at the end of the Super Eight stage.

Despite bowling out Bangladesh for a modest 143 with man-of-the-match Sajid Mahmood claiming three for 27, England slipped to 110 for six in reply and it needed a 37-run stand between Paul Collingwood and Paul Nixon to see them home with 31 balls remaining.

As the squad prepare to take two days off to relax with their wives and girlfriends, they will do so with a stern warning from Vaughan still ringing in their ears.

"It would have been nice to have won by eight wickets and produce a really convincing display, but Nixon and Collingwood used their experience and cool heads to get us over the line in the end," explained Vaughan, who top-scored with a scratchy 30.

He added: "We know we're going to have to improve our display when we play South Africa because we know they are a good side and they're going to put us under pressure."
