FINAL DAY: SURREY WERE BOWLED OUT FOR 467 AFTER BEING SET 503 TO WIN.

Hampshire (22pts), Surrey (4pts)

Shaun Udal had to be stretchered off the field as Hampshire began their season with a dramatic 35-run win.

The Hampshire veteran took three important wickets this afternoon, dismissing Jon Batty, Mark Butcher and Rikki Clarke in seven overs after lunch.

Then Ian Salisbury and Azhar Mahmood responded by taking Surrey to their third-highest fourth innings total with a century stand for the eighth wicket.

It gave Surrey hope of a remarkable and record-breaking victory and it looked bleak for Hampshire when, with Mascarenhas already off the field injured, Udal had to be carried off with a suspected broken ankle with 12 overs remaining.

It needed a stunning catch from James Tomlinson off his own bowling to end the 177-run partnership between Salisbury and Mahmood, which was a Surrey record for the eighth wicket against Hampshire.

With Surrey only needing 43 to win from ten overs, Mahmood cracked the ball straight back at Tomlinson, who held on to a blinder at the third attempt (460-8).

And in the following over Warne lured Salisbury (103) out of his crease and Nic Pothas made no mistake with the stumping(462-9).

With 5.3 overs left, Tomlinson completed a remarkable match by bowling last-man Mohammad Akram (4).

After resuming on 105-2 this morning, Surrey soon lost nightwatchman James Ormond to Shane Warne before Batty and Butcher mounted a gutsy rearguard.

Ormond was caught by Nic Pothas for a 23-ball duck, to complete a 44-ball pair after failing to score in the first innings (113-3).

Then Batty and Butcher set about laying the foundations of their 129-run stand.

Michael Brown missed two sharp chances to dismiss both batsmen at short leg off Udal when Batty had made 52 and when Butcher was on 1.

Batty has been unfortunate not to be touted as a future England wicketkeeper in recent years and brought up his hundred from 227 balls by cover driving James Tomlinson for his 13th four. His 13th first-class hundred also included two slog-swept sixes against Shaun Udal.

Warne had opened in tandem with Udal and began the day with a spell of 11-3-24-1 from the Vauxhall End before introducing seam from both ends after an hour of play.

He reintroduced himself just before lunch soon after Batty and Butcher had put on 100 in 28 overs together.

Surrey captain Butcher reached his fifty from 83 balls by pulling Warne for four in his opposite number's first over back just before lunch.

Warne switched to the Pavilion End after the interval and began the middle session with two maidens, but it was Udal who made the breakthrough.

After having a huge lbw appeal against Butcher turned down when the Surrey skipper was on 57, Udal ended the partnership with the wicket of Batty.

Batty walked before umpire Vanburn Holder could raise his index finger, after going back to the Hampshire off spinner and edging to Nic Pothas in the ninth over after lunch (242-4).

Six overs after dismissing Batty for 121 (280 balls, 16 fours and two sixes), Udal had left-hander Butcher caught by John Crawley at silly point following a leading edge (277-5).

Butcher made 72 (127 balls, 11 fours) and in the following over Hampshire sensed victory when a Warne leg break found Ally Brown's outside edge and Pothas took the catch (277-6).

Udal took his fourth wicket of the innings when Rikki Clarke (0) scooped an easy catch to Jimmy Adams at mid wicket in trying to work him through the leg side (283-7).

Salisbury responded by pulling fellow leg-spinner Warne for successive fours and reached his fifty from 72 balls after tea.

Azhar Mahmood gave Salisbury valuable support and after the pair had put on a century for the eighth wicket, the Pakistani hit Udal for six over mid-wicket.

He slog-swept Udal for another maximum hit to bring up his fifty from 94 balls and take the target down to double figures.

Then Salisbury came down the track to Udal and hit him for another six over long on before dispatching James Bruce over the mid-wicket boundary.

Mascarenhas was unavailable to bowl in a situation he would usually relish after suffering a knee injury.

And with 12 overs remaining Udal had to be carried off after falling to the ground in agony.

Warne called for help immediately and after a ten-minute delay Udal was carried off by substitutes Billy Taylor and Greg Lamb, manager Paul Terry and the respective physios and taken to hospital.

Hampshire bowling: Mascarenhas 9-4-25-0, Bruce 17-2-81-1, Tomlinson 19.2-2-76-2, Warne 44-13-128-3, Adams 4-2-6-0, Udal 40.1-6-138-4.
