Liam Dawson impressed with bat and ball but could not prevent Peshawar Zalmi losing to Pakistan Super League table-toppers Multan Sultans in Dubai last night.

Fresh from his man-of-the match display on debut, when he took a match-winning 3-20, Dawson was even more frugal with the ball in his second match.

He finished with 1-17 from his four overs, including a maiden and the big scalp of Kumar Sangakkara, who was bowled for a 24-ball 28 before the Sultans closed on 183-3.

Then Dawson smashed a 17-ball 32, but it was not enough to prevent a 19-run defeat as Peshawar closed on 164-8.

Sangakkara’s was the first wicket to fall, midway through the eighth over, after a 51-run opening partnership with Ahmed Shehzad, who added another 56 in seven overs with Sohaib Maqsood before he was run out.

Pakistan international Maqsood made an unbeaten 85 from only 42 balls to ensure Peshawar would need more than nine an over.

Batting at six, Dawson added 49 from 27 balls with Peshawar captain Mohammad Hafeez (56).

But with 33 required off the last two overs, Dawson became the second scalp for his former Hampshire teammate Sohail Tanvir (4-0-14-3).

Peshawar stay at the Dubai City Sports Stadium for their next game against Islamabad United for Friday Hampshire’s Rilee Rosssouw is expected to play against the Sultans for the Quetta Gladiators today.
