Shane Warne believes there is more to come from Headingley hero Jimmy Adams.

Adams faces Nottinghamshire at The Rose Bowl (11am, tomorrow) full of confidence after leading Hampshire to the third biggest successful run chase in the county's history against Yorkshire.

The Winchester-born left-hander's career best 168 not out ensured that Hampshire recorded a third win in four championship games by five wickets after reaching 404 on Saturday evening.

Captain Warne believes that Adams will use his Headingley heroics as the launchpad for a lengthy Rose Bowl career.

Warne said: "Jimmy needed to do that for himself as well as us as a team and what a time to do it!

"He showed he has a lot of patience and a decent technique, and as he gets a bit more confidence he'll start to play more shots.

"He doesn't just have a cut, he has a pull he has a drive, he can work it off his legs and he's starting to develop a lot more shots now.

"He stamped his authority.

"He said I want to be the opener at Hampshire', which he needed to do for his spot in the side.

"He's one of those guys that is always under pressure but now he's got that first hundred out of the way I'd like to think he'll keep making them."

Adams had 253 runs for the season at 25.30 before his second innings at Headingley. He now has 421 at 42.10.

Warne added: "Jimmy's the sort of guy you really want to do well and as his captain I was very pleased for him.

"It was a fantastic knock, he played unbelievably well and we're all very happy for him.

"Sometimes the opportunity presents itself to someone to be a hero and make a big hundred and help win the game.

"Jimmy was absolutely superb."

Adams, right, had made eight fifties, including his previous Hampshire-best 85 against Warwickshire last month, without reaching three figures in 62 first-class innings for his home county.

So Paul Terry was delighted to see the 25-year-old end that run before nearly doubling his previous best for the county.

Hampshire manager Terry has worked with Adams at his academy in Perth as well as during his three years at The Rose Bowl.

He said: "Hopefully this will be the start for Jimmy and he'll keep going on.

"He's got a great work ethic, a strong mind and is capable of scoring a lot of runs which is why we've backed him a lot.

"It's been frustrating for us, and for him, because he's got a lot starts without going on but he did so big time at Headingley and that will do him a lot of good."

Warne is now targeting a fourth win in five championship games but has already warned his side not to underestimate Nottinghamshire tomorrow, even though the champions are yet to win this season.

He added: "Notts haven't fired yet so it's a bit of a danger game because they're a quality side with a quality captain, and they'll be tough to beat, that's for sure."

Warne and Terry have a difficult decision to make as Sean Ervine is available after recovering from a finger injury.

But it will be harsh on Greg Lamb if he makes way after he made 32 not out from 18 balls against Yorkshire.

Shaun Udal will replace Richard Logan after being rested for the last two championship matches.

But Chris Tremlett is still not ready to play after three weeks out with a side injury.
