Dominic Thornely is "unlikely" to return to the Rose Bowl next year - and Hampshire Cricket have also confirmed the release of Jono McLean and Richard Logan.

But manager Paul Terry has revealed that Michael Brown, Greg Lamb and James Tomlinson, who were all recalled to championship action against Lancashire yesterday, will be offered new deals.

Overseas batsman Thornely disappointed Hampshire by returning to New South Wales a week early yesterday.

The 28-year-old has been the star of the Hawks' Pro40 campaign, having scored 309 runs at an average of 61 and a strike rate of 99.03.

But he will miss Sunday's play-off against the Glamorgan Dragons at the Rose Bowl.

Thornely has returned to Sydney after being offered the chance to captain NSW in the absence of Australia one-day stars Simon Katich and Brad Haddin.

Terry said: "It's a big blow, I can't say we're particularly happy about it and it's unlikely he'll be back.

"I found out that Dom was going early when I was on the golf course on Tuesday afternoon.

"He had an e-mail from them, they dangled the captaincy in front of him and that's where his career is."

Hampshire are likely to re-sign either Katich, Shane Watson or Michael Clarke next season, the last before counties are permitted only one overseas player, but Terry cautioned: "A lot can happen between now and then, it's up in the air at the moment."

McLean and Logan are the other players who have played their last games for Hampshire.
