AFC TOTTON sit proudly at the top of the Sydenhams Wessex League following their 3-0 home win against Alton Town on Saturday, writes Derek Hawkins.

It's the first time in the 20-year history of the Wessex League that the friendly Testwood Park club - who were founder members back in 1986 - have enjoyed the view from the SWL summit.

"It's about trying to stay here now!" smiled Totton chairman Richie Maton.

"We've had some great results in October and now we need to carry them on through November. We need to be where we are now at the end of the season and, if we could do that, it would be a fantastic achievement for this club."

Totton got off to a flying start against Alton when Mark Piper crossed for Floyd Hamodu to head home inside the first minute.

The visitors then rattled the woodwork before a Matt Troon cross was parried by the keeper and Mark Osman pounced to double Totton's lead on 70 minutes.

The points were sealed ten minutes later when Troon found Mike Gosney, whose superb cross was headed in by sub Kevin Reacord.

It was in-form Cowes Sports who helped Totton into pole position by derailing leaders Wimborne Town 2-1 at Westwood Park.

The Islanders moved ahead after 15 minutes when Charlie Smeetin crossed for Rob Kirby to power home his header.

Cowes then leaked only their second goal in 810 minutes of league action this season when Stuart Cannie equalised midway through the second half.

But Cowes snatched all three points on 80 minutes when Mark Augustus broke through the Magpies' rearguard before squaring a pass to an unmarked Phil Willey, who made no mistake.
