FORMER Saints star Kevin Davies is hoping to end 10 years of hurt and collect an FA Cup winners' medal.

The Bolton striker was making his way in the game in 1997 and wearing the colours of unsung Chesterfield.

The Derbyshire side reached the semi-finals against the odds only to lose to Middlesbrough in controversial circumstances.

Referee David Elleray refused to award Chesterfield a goal at a crucial stage of the game when the ball appeared to cross the line.

Davies, 29, said: ''When the cup comes around that moment still rankles.

''I saw David Elleray on the television recently and a few words came out.

''But football is all about talking points and this remains a big one".

Davies, who first joined Saints a few months after Chesterfield's semi-final exit, is quietly confident Bolton can overcome Arsenal in the fourth round on Sunday - even though Arsene Wenger's side have not been beaten at the Emirates Stadium.

Training has been ''brilliant'' this week, he says, after the 5-1 defeat at Middlesbrough last weekend.

Bolton are aiming to knock the Gunners out of the FA Cup for the second season running.

Davies, who was not part of Gordon Strachan's FA Cup final 16 against Arsenal four years ago and who was given a free transfer from Saints shortly after, said: ''We have responded well to that defeat at Middlesbrough.

"It appears we are not working hard enough.

''Arsenal may want to play a beautiful game but sometimes it does not work for them.

''We can play - if we get two or three goals ahead.

''We know what we have to do to win a game. It has worked for us over the last three or four years.

''We can get a positive result there and I would love to win the FA Cup before I hang up my boots".
