ADMINISTRATION looms for Pompey today – while the club are also struggling to field a team for tomorrow’s trip to Barnsley.

The beleaguered Championship outfit has hit a real low point as they battle for their survival both on and off the pitch.

Pompey made an application earlier this week to enter administration, and they hope to be given the approval to do so at a High Court hearing today.

That would mean an immediate ten-point deduction, ahead of their visit to Oakwell this weekend, putting them one place above the relegation zone.

To make matters worse, Pompey have major injury problems going into tomorrow’s game.

Captain Liam Lawrence (calf) is definitely out, with Pompey admitting yesterday that they couldn’t afford to send him for a scan to determine the extent of the damage.

Kelvin Etuhu (hamstring) will also miss the game, along with long-term absentees David Norris (hernia) and Luke Varney (knee).

Ricardo Rocha (calf), Joel Ward (hip) and Greg Halford (knee), who all started Tuesday’s 1-0 home defeat against Ipswich, are major doubts.

Manager Michael Appleton said: “We’re in a little bit of a difficult position regarding Saturday’s game.

“We’re getting to the stage where we’re not going to be competitive, to the detriment of the division.

“Four of the lads are definite no-nos. Three others – Greg, Joel and Ricardo – are 50/50 at best, but it’s a massive, massive risk to play them, because there is a serious danger that if they do they will make the injuries far worse and be out for weeks.

“That leaves us with 11 senior professionals, one of whom is Kanu, who has trained but has not been in the squad for some time now because of a back problem, while Jamie Ashdown has not been able to train for the last four weeks because of knee ligament damage, even though he’s been on the bench.”
