SHOLING remain just two thirds of the way through their Southern One South & West campaign after yet another match fell foul of the weather last night.

The Boatmen’s home fixture against Bridgwater Town was postponed following a 2.15 pitch inspection at the soggy Silverlake Arena.

It leaves Sholing with 14 games to squeeze into the next five-and-a-half weeks. But their problems are mild compared to Bridgwater, who have played just 25 of their 42 league fixtures.

Ideally Boatmen’s boss Dave Diaper would like to have waited another couple of hours yesterday to see if the rain would ease, but he said: “The biggest problem was the distance Bridgwater had to travel.

“If we’d waited until four, we might have got away with it, but it would have been unfair to expect them to travel for three hours only to turn up and find the game had been postponed.

“Bridgwater have mentioned trying to rearrange it for a Sunday, but we’ll try and avoid that.”

Sholing have two more home matches scheduled for this week – against Evesham United tomorrow (Wednesday) and Wimborne Town on Saturday.

“We’re hopeful for tomorrow, but we’re in the hands of the weather,” said Diaper. “The problem is that the water table is so high. “It’s been such a stop-start season and it’s not just the first team fixtures we’ve got to fit in, we’ve got to work around the reserves as well. They’re due to play a Wyvern Challenge Cup semi-final at New Milton tonight (Tuesday).”

Had last night’s game gone ahead, Byron Mason would have missed it after going off with an ankle injury in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Hungerford. The powerhouse midfielder is unlikely to play tomorrow, but should be fit for Saturday.
