ONE of the most decorated teams in the history of English football continues its quest to win a historic ‘Quadruple Quadruple’ this weekend.

Sunday morning outfit Knighton Arms lifted their 13th trophy in four seasons earlier this month – and have three more available to them.

Having already won a fourth successive Southampton Sunday Senior Cup, their sights are set on another City of Southampton Sunday League title, the AJ Miller Cup – and tomorrow’s Hampshire Sunday Senior Cup final at AFC Totton’s Testwood Stadium.

Their achievement is already unprecedented at county level.

Only one other side has retained the 48 year-old Hampshire Sunday Senior Cup once before (Toogoods FC back in 1970/71), never mind all four competitions twice.

And FA historian David Barber has confirmed: “I’ve never heard of a team achieving a ‘Quadruple Quadruple’.”

Knighton manager Ben Kneller said: “It’s already a great achievement by the lads to turn up every Sunday morning and do what they’ve done.

“They do it for each other, we have a great team morale and I’m sure I’ll be more nervous than they will be, as they’ve all been there before and know what to do.

“But most of them play at Southern League or Wessex level so I won’t know who’s available until Saturday night!”

Knighton Arms have some of the best players from Hampshire’s non-league circuit, including Sholing’s Pete Castle, who became Reading’s youngest player under Alan Pardew a decade ago.

Several GE Hamble players also regularly turn out, including goalkeeper Ryan Gosney (younger brother of Totton winger Mike), who has been a spectator for much of the season, so dominant have his teammates been.

Rivals City Central stand between Knighton and another trophy tomorrow, and have themselves had the services of Sholing players like the Mason brothers (Barry, Byron and Daniel), as well as Marvin McLean and in-form striker Lee Wort, at times this season.

Ironically, Sholing boss Dave Diaper will be presenting the Hampshire Sunday Senior Cup tomorrow as a representative of sponsors BSA Regal, following today’s Southern League match against Wimborne.

He said: “It’ll be like an inter-club match for us to an extent. I just hope they don’t all injure each other!

“My players don’t play every Sunday, but I usually let them in the big games like this one.

“However, it’s sandwiched between two important games for us – we travel to Mangotsfield on Monday night – so I’ll wait until after [today’s] game against Wimborne before deciding who can play in the final.

“And if I see anyone giving more effort on Sunday than they did for me I won’t be happy!”

Despite Knighton Arms’ record-breaking last few seasons, Kneller admits the squad is unlikely to stay together for 2013/14.

“We’re not sure we’ll continue because there’s not much left for us to achieve,” he said.

Winning the 'Quadruple Quadruple' would be a fine way to end an era. Kick off tomorrow is at 10.30 am – weather permitting.
