GOSPORT Borough’s slim hopes of mounting a ‘great escape’ from National League South relegation are fading fast.
Another three points slipped from their grasp when they lost 4-0 away to Welling United, suffering a second-half collapse.
Welling were one of the sides the third-to-bottom Hampshire club had been hoping to reel in.
Instead the Wings have fluttered up to 15th place, eight points clear of Borough, thanks to second-half braces from Pierre Joseph-Dubois and Alex Cathline.
The gap between fifth-placed Poole Town and sixth-placed Hungerford has shrunk to four points.
While Poole lost 3-0 away to fellow promotion contenders Chelmsford City, ex-Winchester hotshot Warren Bentley was on target in Hungerford’s 2-1 victory at relegation threatened Whitehawk.
Poole went in 0-0 at half-time at the Melbourne Stadium and it remained that way until the 79th minute when Louie Theophanous broke the deadlock.
Chelmsford ran away with it courtesy of two-goal Shaun Jeffers.
