WIMBORNE Town will be hosting Gosport Borough in a friendly for the Andy Culliford Trophy this Saturday (July 29, 3pm).

The match, proposed by Gosport’s former Wimborne boss Alex Pike, will be played annually on a home/away basis in tribute to the much-loved local footballer who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2011, aged just 34.

Culliford, who played for both clubs as well as Paulton Rovers, Poole Town, Bournemouth Poppies, Bashley and Brockenhurst, will attend the pre-season game and is looking forward to catching up with some familiar old friends.

Brian McIntyre of Wimborne Town said: “His courage and conduct is inspirational in fighting MND and is humbling to witness for many.”

The Andy Culliford Trophy has been donated by Tony Dark of Alda Glass of Ringwood.
