SHOLING’s hopes of lifting the FA Vase for a second time in six years were sunk at Norwich Victoria this afternoon.

Dave Diaper’s Boatmen lost their quarter-final tie 3-1 after extra-time having played 77 minutes with ten men.

Sholing were the better side and deservedly took the lead on 27 minutes through Lee Wort.

But hero turned villain two minutes before the interval when Wort was shown a straight red card for a late tackle.

Northwich equalised with a flicked header in first-half stoppage time and, although ten-man Sholing had the better of the chances after the break, the tie remained deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Cruelly for the Boatmen they fell behind to a wickedly deflected Ryan Winder goal 22 minutes into extra time and their dreams were shattered by a Norwich third, scored by Darryhl Mason, four minutes later.

Elsewhere Chertsey Town won 2-0 at West Auckland, while Cray Valley beat Willand Rovers 3-1.

The Canterbury City v Biggleswade tie takes place tomorrow.
