Neil Harris pleased as Cambridge progress in EFL Cup

League Two side Barnet scored first but Cambridge quickly hit back to take a 2-1 victory, with all three goals coming in the space of eight minutes.

“It wasn’t just about the result for me,” said United boss Harris.

“The result was nice to get through, nice for the fans to see a home win on the back of the momentum from last year.

“However what I want to see is structure, individual performances, combination play. It was a very young side, six players under the age of 24.

“I saw a lot of positives, I was really pleased with a lot of it. We showed a character that took a few months to build last year coming from behind in a game. We’ve done it again on day one.

“There was a lot of positives, none more so than a couple of good goals.”

Barnet boss Dean Brennan felt his side should not have had an early goal disallowed.

“You need a little bit of luck in the cup. You need refereeing decisions to be made correctly. We scored in the first half and it was given offside and it wasn’t,” he said.

“We were a little bit wasteful in front of goal, Tavares had a great chance. So we can blame ourselves a little bit but we kept going, showed lots of grit, never gave in, and we’re a little bit unlucky to exit the competition.”
