The Coventry fans refused to turn on their team, despite witnessing a 5-0 thumping by Brighton.
The Sky Blues have found life tough on their return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years, having now lost their opening four games without scoring, but when the full-time whistle was blown at the Coventry Building Society Arena the home fans showed they remain firmly behind the team.
Supporters sang their side across the line and chants of ‘Sky Blue Army’ and ‘We’ll live and die in these towns’ reverberated around the stadium right until the players headed down the tunnel.
Coventry played the majority of the second half on Sunday with a man less after Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off and the fans showed their appreciation for the efforts of the players after they forced six saves from Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The defiant chants started when Yasin Ayari curled home a lovely finish to make it 5-0, with the cheers of the Brighton contingent quickly drowned out by the Coventry supporters getting behind their players at the end of a tough afternoon.
Boss Frank Lampard in turn showed his appreciation for the backing, saying: “There is an understanding, and I’m not asking for sympathy, that the level has gone up. They saw us with 10 men for a long period, I’m not taking that like I’m not grateful, I appreciate very much because it’s a help to the players to get that feeling.”
