ISLE of Wight solo sailor Chris Stanmore-Major has made a New Year’s resolution to make it across one of the world’s most dangerous oceans in one piece.
The Cowes yachtsman, pictured, is currently racing across the desolate Southern Ocean from Cape Town to Wellington in the VELUX 5 OCEANS round-the-world yacht race, known as the Ultimate Solo Challenge.
After spending Christmas at sea on his 60ft yacht Spartan, Stanmore-Major now faces welcoming in the new year alone.
“My New Year’s resolution is to get safely across the Southern Ocean to Wellington,” said the 33-year-old, currently in fourth position. “Of course I will attempt to catch up with the other guys and sail as fast as I can but I am not going to break my boat in doing so – we still have the challenge of sprints three, four and five ahead.”
