SOUTHAMPTON sailor Mike Golding and his crew onboard Ecover last night broke the race record when winning the St Nazaire-St Malo event around the coast of Brittany.
Golding, below, and co won the classic 284-mile race in one day, 8 hours, 48 minutes and 35 seconds.
That was two hours, 10 minutes and nine seconds better than Jean-Pierre Dick's previous record.
"The conditions were not ideal for record breaking as we were going upwind for most of the race and the last few miles we had very little wind," Golding reported.
"However, it is good to hold it but I reckon that, with the right conditions, it is doable within 24 hours."
