Ronald Koeman said a win over Burnley was a perfect birthday present – but admitted it looks like being grim news regarding Fraser Forster’s injury.

Koeman’s 52nd birthday was greeted by choruses of ‘happy birthday’ from the St Mary’s faithful, whose side enjoyed a 2-0 victory over the Clarets.
However, there was a worrying suspected knee ligament injury for Forster, who was stretchered off early in the first half and quickly taken to hospital “The best present,” said Koeman of the win. “The boys gave me the best present for my birthday, a good win, an important win, three points. A nice present.”

Of Forster he added: “He’s now in the hospital. He’s taking a scan and we have to wait but it’s not looking very positive about his knee.
“What really happened we have to wait about the scan but the doctor wasn’t very positive.”
Koeman did at least have the experienced Kelvin Davis to call upon, and the club captain made two outstanding saves after being drafted into the side for the first time in more than a year.
“It’s difficult because it was a long time ago that he played but the positive thing is that he’s an experienced goalkeeper,” said Koeman.
“He’s not by himself nervous to come in, he looks comfortable and that’s important for the defenders and the team organisation and everything can happen in football.
“A little bit unlucky for Fraser and I hope it will be good news from the doctor but it’s looking negative but we will see.”
