RONALD Koeman has confirmed Saints have not received a serious offer for Morgan Schneiderlin yet this summer, while adding the club are still optimistic of being able to sign Toby Alderweireld.

Schneiderlin has attracted interest from Manchester United, but, so far, that has not resulted in a formal bid for the midfielder, who would likely cost about £25m.

The France international, 25, was at Staplewood this morning for the first day of pre-season training, with Koeman underlining that he is still very much their player, despite reports that have suggested United are closing in on him.

In an interview with the club, Koeman said: “We have the situation with Morgan Schneiderlin, we will have to wait what will happen.

"Until now, we have not a serious bid for him from Man United. We will wait, but OK – that’s business that normally starts from now. It’s no problem – it’s the first day.

"We have the experience from last season – it will be not the same this season, but we are prepared for everything. I am looking forward for another good season."

Koeman also added that Saints are hopeful they can complete a permanent move for Alderweireld, who enjoyed a sensational loan spell at St Mary’s last season from Atletico Madrid.

Tottenham appear to be their main rivals if the Spanish club do choose to sell, as seems a distinct possibility, but Koeman is optimistic Saints can win the battle for him.

"The player likes to stay, we like to keep the player but it’s a little difficulty at the moment with Atlético Madrid," he said.

"I have a good hope he will stay for Southampton."
