It may be a bad sign for all road users, especially the vulnerable, but Oxfordshire County Council turned off all of its 72 fixed cameras and 89 mobile cameras earlier, in an effort to cut costs.

As with many other local authority in the UK, Oxford does not receive any revenues from the cameras - all the money generated from fines go to the Treasury's coffers.

With local authorities across the country under pressure to slash their budgets, others could follow Oxford in axing speed cameras.

Oxford County Council is cutting its funding to the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership by £600,000 in order to meet £11m savings set by the central government.

But already two of these speed cameras have recorded up to and 80% increase in speeding motorists, how will this impact on road safety? If more motorists are now obliovouse to the speed limit, will this cause more accidents due to speeding?
