The first ever Winchester Fashion Week has invaded The Brooks Centre this week and it’s been very exciting to be part of it, albeit only as a neighbour. They’ve occupied a couple of empty shops using one as an art gallery and the other as a pop-up shop for local designers to sell their craftwork- not only clothes.

The level and range of talent on display is quite extraordinary. You can see in the photo an amazing lampshade. This may be the biggest but it’s not the only piece showing amazing imagination and inventiveness, as well as skill in the use of varying materials. The original art in the gallery is just as impressive.

Following the decline in British manufacturing, the creative industries may yet be this country’s salvation. Our designs are already sought throughout the world. I can also see how, in these difficult economic times, people may begin to revolt against spending for spending’s sake on mass produced imports from China and prefer instead to buy well designed items which are a pleasure to own and even pass on to future generations. My shop has specialised in design-led gifts and accessories since we opened four years ago and our business continues to thrive.

With a new generation of designers as talented as those displaying their wares during Winchester Fashion Week, I foresee great things for Great Britain. The Week and its pop-up shop and gallery finish on Sunday 31 July but not before they have some catwalk shows at Winchester Guildhall. I hope it becomes an annual fixture.
