SAD though it is to hear of the proposed closure of Southampton’s Tourist Information Centre (TIC), there is still a glimmer of hope for the many visitors to our fair city.

A brand new enterprise has just recently opened in the heart of the city centre.

Oceans, situated on the QE2 mile, has opened its doors to the public and offers some much-needed services for both visitors and locals.

They have a shop selling souvenirs and gifts with a difference and a large selection of maritime books.

They have a Visitors Information Point. This is, I am sure, designed to run in conjunction with the TIC, not in competition, although it is possible that it may well become the only point of contact for the many cruise passengers that visit Southampton.

There is also a very useful baggage drop for leaving luggage while our city is explored and money is spent in our local businesses, boosting our local economy.

Also coming soon are the tea rooms, serving cream teas, traditional teas and fine coffees, as well as cakes etc.

all with table service and at reasonable prices too.

As well as all that, there is also to be an exhibition featuring the much-loved QE2 liner.

So although the future is bleak for both the TIC and the QE2, let us hope that this budding new enterprise continues to grow, as it offers much-needed services that have been lacking for the visitors to Southampton.
