I object to the proposed Southampton Laser Gateway as, among other things, it is an irresponsible misuse of funds and an undesirable, unnecessary light pollution of the skies of Southampton and surrounding areas.

The lasers are to be funded at a cost of, supposedly, £250,000 by the South East England Development Agency.

SEEDA is a government-funded agency set up in 1999. It is therefore likely that most of the money involved is taxpayer's money.

When there are so many other essential, underfunded necessities of life, the majority of the public, whether they are taxpayers or not, will feel that this scheme is an indulgent waste of money.

MRS ANN MORRIS, Romsey.
